What I find most fascinating about the story is the author. Despite all of that, we are still enthralled by the passion Carmen and Don Jose show, by their complex psychological profiles an their crimes. They would both rather die than to compromise with one another.

Varmen my reading life I’ve heard of the quintessential Carmen, the wild gypsy woman who led hooligan bands and smugglers throughout Spain until she was a living legend.

What a pleasure to finally read Prosper Merimee’s classic rendition of the legend he heard from his friend the Contessa de Montijo in Madrid.

Carmen’s clearly the seed from which sprang such marvelous creations as Catherine Earnshaw and Augusta Geraldine Alaisda of Gondal. This is storytelling based on the grand oral tradition, and like the translations of Paul Bowles is a vivid education for the practitioner of written fiction.

Carmen was no exception. Other readers seem to praise her free spirit and love of independence, but to me those things came across as selfish and diva-ish. She seems to want her cake merrimee eat it too. I defy anyone to read this and not feel sorry for poor, innocent, manipulated Jose who fell in love with a vexing, perpetual lawbreaker. Because of her manipulation of his feelings, his life changed drastically and he ended up a rogue. All because this one gypsy woman.

I take issue with the fact that everyone pits this as a story of “passionate lovers”. It’s a love tragedy for sure, since they both die in the end. But for me the love was entirely one sided poor, smitten Jose. Carmen spent time with him prospe made love to him only when she pleased, even when she because his romi. And all he ever really wanted was to return to an honest life and make her an honest law abiding woman. And at the end it hurt my heart when she refused to quit thieving, smuggling, conning, sleeping around etc, when Jose felt desperate enough to kill her.

An interesting thing to debate would be who the real “bad guy” was. To me Jose, though he murdered the woman he loved, was never the bad guy. Carmen, however, is one of those everyday kind of villains. The ones you don’t see coming and who leave lasting, psychological anxieties. Without doubt you can describe Jose as a victim of emotional abuse, pushed to the brink, snapping and taking the life of his tormentor.

He wasn’t a bad man at heart, we see it often enough throughout the story and then when he turns himself over to the police and admits his crime – a poetic last attempt of chivalry.
