In this book, Claudius ascends simply because he’s the last man standing, and in seeing how he administers Rome he scuffs himself up a bit. It wasn’t a minute too soon either as Claudius discovers Caligula’s papers showing that Claudius was the next to be murdered. With all the intrigue, scheming, conspiracy and illicit affairs going on you tend to forget that these people actually existed in real-life and are not just characters you could easily find in a modern day soap opera.
