However, it is a ‘ripping yarn’ which kept me reading, enthusiastically, to the end. The plot is full of twists, sub plots and intrigue. Ignore typographical errors like ‘know ledge’ and immerse yourself in the storyline, letting your imagination create the movie, and you should enjoy this tale enormously.

What a puzzling book.

| THE FULCANELLI MANUSCRIPT, by Scott Mariani

It seemed to be a mix of three genres: I found it disappointing to have to accept the transition from straight thriller to fantasy — although I should have picked up the clue from the title. Any story that explores the subject of alchemy is not going to be based in reality. The plot became more and more weird and torturous as the book progressed. I like plot twists, but it just became too much. Too many hoops for the hero to jump through, and too many fights, revelations and further adventures to get to the final denouement.

The codes, symbols, clues and riddles, which held a fascination at the beginning of the book, became tiresome. Having vented my frustration, there were good points. The story was fast-paced and quite well-written. The author had clearly done a huge amount of research and must have spent a great deal of time formulating the plot.

I can understand why some people found it wonderful — but it is not for me. Top-rated Most recent Top-rated.

Having recently just finished the 16th book in the Ben Hope series which I really enjoyed and not having read the previous 15, I thought I would go back to the beginning and read the series from the start.

There are many things I like about The Alchemist’s Secret: It is a mystery as well as a thriller. It has lots of gung-ho action. The characterisation is pretty good.

It contains a little romance and the plot has many twists and turns. The chapters are fairly short and usually leave you wanting to read more. But there are some aspects I found a little irritating: You’ll reach the end of a chapter and suddenly the next chapter opens with things that have happened elsewhere a few months or years earlier, before leaping back to the present. This is fine provided it is done in moderation as it breaks up the flow of the narrative.

While one expects a thriller to have some twists and turns, in this novel there are just too many – no wonder the hero is exhausted at times! However, overall I really liked this book. It is a good adventure story which, in spite of its shortcomings, is quick and easy to read and holds one’s attention right up until its dramatic ending. While the blurb didn’t lead me to expect a wildly original thriller, the reviews had given me an expectation of a decent read.

This is one of those books that grabs you from the word go and impossible to put down! I had never heard of Scott Mariani but having since read the reviews of his books felt compelled to read the Ben Hope series, and am glad I did! The main character Ben is like James Bond with a touch of Jason Bourne who works on his own, and prefers to do so due to personal issues. The story itself was a good plot and very plausible and keeps the reader guessing along the way as it how it is going to pan out.

It was a very interesting read about Alchemy and the power it holds. You couldn’t but like Ben and feel for him when you read about his past and how it is used within the story. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series and would recommend it to anyone who likes a good thriller with a touch of espionage. One person found this helpful.

I just didn’t like this book. Fast paced but unbelievable plot. Generic characters, nothing new or exciting. Sorry I really wanted to like this but it just did not hold my interest. I actually didn’t care if Ben succeeded in his mission, I just wanted it to finish. I had never come across this author until I heard his name mentioned on tv and I am so glad I decided to download the first Ben Hope story.

I am an avid reader and enjoy books of many different genres, but am now determined to work my way through the Ben Hope anthology. I thoroughly enjoyed Fulcanslli descriptive and well-researched writing.

The background of this story is based on historical fact intertwined with the intricately developed storyline, and the oscillation between the mahuscript definitely made it a page-turner for me. Out of all the hundreds of books I have read this is the FIRST one to prompt me to write a review so it manuscriptt have been good! I’ve previously read books from the ‘Ben Hope’ series by Scott Mariani but made the mistake of not starting from the beginning, here in Book 1.

Now having a Kindle means I can access all of the series and have started here with book one, not previously read and am now on book 3. You won’t be disappointed!

I was looking for some summer ‘leave your brain at the door’ mahuscript, and this was it. It’s an obvious Dan Brown clone that doesn’t try to be anything other then that. Its main character, Manuscrip Hope, is like Jack Bauer on steroids – he just happens to be awesome at everything. Got ninja skills at killing? Can decipher ancient code? And it’s this last point that actually began to irk me. I’m not a feminist, but even I was getting annoyed by how the two manhscript women in the story fell into the tired old tropes: Of course, Ben has to rescue them both.

Overall, it is what it is and does a good job of it. Kanuscript liked this book because I could understand it not like similar books by Dan Brown! Scott’s books don’t get into too much technical detail but manage to keep you hanging on to the last gasp. Thrilling writing and looking forward to reading all of the books.
